Caldera is a one man operation and is the combination of my love & passion for cycling, my eye for detail, skill with hand tools, my artisan approach to framebuilding and my desire to be creative in everyday work. My aim is to create bikes that function, fit & perform to the highest standard and that will last a lifetime & more.
I’m interested in all forms of cycling and build various styles of bikes including road bikes, Cyclocross bikes, randonneurs, commuters, townies, track bikes and the oddities in-between. All Caldera bikes are built and customised for their rider, incorporating design features, handling and aesthetics to suit each customer’s needs.
Through my work in the bike industry I have sold many types and styles of bikes and dealt with a whole spectrum of customers who each have different wants and needs. With this experience from the mainstream bike industry, I have found that time and time again, the stock sizes and the available bike styles often don’t fit the needs of customers as well as they could or should; this is why I believe that in speaking to you, I can build a custom bike that will suit your needs better than no-other.
I build most of the Caldera frames with Lugs. Lugged frame construction has proven itself to be super durable over the past century and along with today’s modern, lightweight tubing – Lightweight & durable frames can be constructed that will last a lifetime and beyond. To me, lugged construction is the most beautiful way to build a bicycle frame. I also love the fact that a modern, lightweight, steel lugged bike is very intriguing to the uninitiated.
Geometry and fit are also very important to me, in-fact these things come before anything else, what’s the point in discussing a certain construction technique, tubing, the groupset or a lightweight wheelset if the bike doesn’t fit or handle properly?
My aim is to build bikes that let you climb smoothly and efficiently, make you feel like you’re on rails around tight bends and let you descend mountains with confidence.
